The exhibition, based on a 5-year Indo-Italian research project, illustrates the consequences of democratic choice in independent India, its concrete existence and its globalized outcomes, which remain topical today.
Four examples of Democratic New Towns are presented, Jamshedpur, Bhubaneswar, Faridabad and Chandigarh, the result of interplay between the ideas and experiences of Frey, Drew and Le Corbusier and those of their Indian counterparts, Varma, Doshi, Correa and Rewal. The cities are described in detail and documented by means of photographs of their current state, now as functional and interconnected as modern European cities.
The projects implemented by India during the process of its democratization can be considered the first step of the adoption of an inclusive system by newly independent countries.
